Why the Paperwork Is the Story

For 1969 only, Chevrolet dropped SS 396 as a separate model series and made it an option: RPO Z25, available on the Malibu and 300 Deluxe. The consequence is that nothing on the VIN or the Fisher Body plate identifies a 1969 Chevelle as a genuine SS. A real one and a badged Malibu carry the same numbers.

Which is why this car matters. Its original window sticker lists 6Z25AA SS 396 EQUIP — $347.60, in black and white, from Chevrolet Motor Division. That single line is proof no clone can produce. The Z25 package carried the L35 396 rated at 325 horsepower — confirmed here by the correct 396 Turbo-Jet 325 HP air cleaner — backed by the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400. Both are represented as numbers-matching to the car.

Restoration and Color Change

This Chevelle was delivered in Glacier Blue, paint code 53, with a dark blue vinyl roof and dark blue cloth interior, trim code 762. All three are documented on the window sticker that comes with the car, and the original codes remain on the cowl tag.

It now wears LeMans Blue, which is 1969 Chevelle paint code 71 — a correct factory color for the year, not a custom shade — over a white vinyl roof and white interior. The original NC8 chambered exhaust has also been replaced with a MagnaFlow stainless system.

The result is a car that presents as a period-correct 1969 SS 396 in one of the model’s most striking factory colors, on a numbers-matching and fully documented chassis, restored in colors other than its own.
